Dr. Ross McCurdy: Chief Operating Officer

Dr. Ross McCurdy oversees CSEE’s mission to bring together world-class expertise with a research focus on innovation in mine water management, environmental remediation and emerging energy issues in a new, LEED certified, green building.

Dr. McCurdy is also President of LearnCorp International (LCI), a private company wholly owned by Cape Breton University Foundation with a mandate to develop and manage corporate education and training programs, particularly those with an international or e/learning component.

Ross was formerly President and CEO of the Cape Breton Development Corporation, better known as DEVCO, and was instrumental in developing their environmental and remediation strategies, transforming contaminated, industrial mining sites to commercial and/or residential standards for the benefit of the various communities within the Cape Breton.

Ross has also served as President and CEO of InNOVAcorp, a provincial crown corporation mandated to help Nova Scotia companies commercialize new technologies; and Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of Ocean Nutrition Canada, a global company head-quartered in Nova Scotia, innovating and supplying quality marine-based natural ingredients to the supplement and functional food markets. He has held senior positions with MDS, Fenwick Laboratories Limited and Victoria General Hospital (now QEII), Atlantic Canada's largest teaching hospital and was an associate professor at Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Medicine and adjunct professor at the Technical University of Nova Scotia.

Dr. McCurdy holds a Bachelor of Science from Saint Mary's University, Masters’ degrees in Public Health and in Science from the University of Minnesota, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Water Resources Engineering from the Technical University of Nova Scotia. He chaired the Nova Scotia Task Force on Productivity, Competitiveness & Economic Prosperity and Chaired the Independent Review of Public Concerns of Radon & Uranium at the Proposed New Landfill Site in Halifax Regional Municipality. He was Chair of the Arthritis Society of Nova Scotia and the Leadership Chair, Metro Halifax United Way. He is currently a member of the Canada Foundation for Innovation Board of Directors and serves on the National Executive Committee 2012 of the Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference.

David Alderson: Program Development Scientist

David holds a Certificate of Applied Science from Acadia University, a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Dalhousie University, and a Master of Business Administration from Cape Breton University with a concentration in Community Economic Development. He is a registered Engineer-in-Training with engineers Nova Scotia.
 

Stan Johnson: Sustainability Researcher

Stan is a Mi’kmaq from Eskasoni, Cape Breton, with 10 years experience as the Eskasoni Economic Development Corporation’s Economic Development Officer/IT Specialist. Stan is also a partner with First Nation Engineering & Technical Services. In 2010 he successfully completed NSCC’s Energy Sustainability Engineering Technology Diploma Program.

Janice Basque: Jr. Sustainability Researcher

Janice is a First Nation person from Waycobah, presently residing in Membertou. She is a CBU alumni, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 2006 and a Bachelor of Technology degree in Public Health in 2008. Janice completed her Public Health practicum with Health Canada in First Nation communities throughout Cape Breton. She also worked with the Bras d’Or Institute for Ecosystems, as well as with Public Works and Government Services Canada at the Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens Remediation project.
